Saoirse Ronan is one of the most exciting actors of her generation. From her very first Academy Award-nominated performance in Atonement to her lead role as Jo March in Little Women, she has been enchanting us on the silver screen.

She takes her food as seriously as her acting, much like her Lady Bird and Little Women co-star, Timothée Chalamet. In fact, she even signed up to take a cooking course!

What dessert did Saoirse Ronan learn to make?

According to this interview, she took a week-long cooking class with a friend in Edinburgh, Scotland. “It was just sort of beginner’s things, like different sorts of crumbles and pastries,” she told Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest.

She also learned how to properly brown meat and prepare a proper Sunday roast, which is a classic meal throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. But her favorite part of the course was what they made on the last day of class.

“They [the instructors] said to us the whole week, ‘the thing that you’re cooking on Friday is like the best thing that you’re ever gonna have in your life’,” she said in the interview. The dessert? Sticky ginger cake!

What is sticky ginger cake?

Saoirse says that the sticky ginger cake is similar to a classic sticky toffee pudding, but it’s made in a loaf pan rather than an individual dish or cake pan. I think that makes sense for a beginner’s class—it’s probably less finicky to make it in a loaf pan for your first go at it. Regardless of the pan you use, I guarantee that it is delicious.

I would be happy to eat anything Saoirse makes for me, whether it’s a sticky ginger cake or a whole Sunday roast!
