When there’s no time to waste (looking at you, folks with newborns), Tovala is our meal kit of choice. This heat-and-eat option requires minimal prep—slicing and seasoning veggies or adding water or milk to a tray of gnocchi, for instance. Sure, it’s a little extra work than, say, a microwavable meal, but this makes these meals feel homemade and nutritional. Then, pop your dish into the Tovala smart oven, which makes cooking these meals almost seamless.
Simply prep each meal according to the instructions, scan the QR code on the recipe card with the app and press start on the oven. I’ve found that the trickiest part about using air fryer toaster ovens is figuring out cook times, functions and temperatures. Unlike those finicky appliances, the QR code system that Tovala uses with its meals and smart oven is completely foolproof.
The Tovala smart oven costs $300 for the cheaper model and $350 for the pricier one, if bought alone. Alternatively, it costs $50 and $99, respectively, if you buy six meals to accompany it and subscribe to the service. I found the splurge to be worth it, though. One thing to note: Tovala meals are only delivered on Mondays.
"I'm pretty smitten with Tovala. It's not a traditional prepared meal service in that the food needs to be cooked rather than simply reheated upon arrival, but the company masterfully plans each recipe so that only a minute or two of prep is required. This workaround makes it so that the meals you're eating feel so much fresher and even partially homemade."

In addition to traditional entrees, some breakfasts are available, as well as add-ons like egg rolls and garlic bread for select meals. Once you choose all your meals and proceed to the next page, you can add the previously listed add-ons, desserts (such as a brownie, cookie or single-serve pineapple upside-down cake) and small breakfast items, like an Eggo Belgian waffle.
Taste Of Home
The companion app pertains just as much to the Tovala smart oven as the meal service. You can manage upcoming menu selections/deliveries and access support and cooking instructions on basics that are specific to the brand’s proprietary appliance (e.g., air-fried pizza and chicken) along with more detailed recipes (e.g., Pear Walnut Crisp and Coconut Curry Steamed Mussels). There’s also a list of brands with items that cook well in the smart oven, as well as cooking instructions for those specific items. You can even connect the smart oven to WiFi and pair it with the app.
2025 Update
Recent testing led to a few slight changes, including moving HelloFresh to the “Best Overall” category and moving Dinnerly to HelloFresh’s previous category, “Best for Kids.” We also tested and included Tovala and Home Chef as “Best Prepared” and “Best Variety,” respectively.
What to Look for When Subscribing to a Meal Delivery Service
EMIKO FRANZEN FOR TASTE OF HOME
There are a lot of reasons to invest in a meal delivery service. On top of the convenience factor (especially for new parents), Kristen says meal delivery services also help families with dietary restrictions or specific nutritional needs, since gluten-free or vegan services take the guesswork out of sourcing ingredients. Here’s what to consider when choosing a meal kit:
- Price: The best meal delivery service for families fits within a budget.
- Familiarity: Keep an eye out for those that feature kid-approved recipes with familiar foods and fun flavors.
- Taste: Although the recipes are kid-friendly, you want the service’s offerings to appeal to the adults in the house, too.
- Ingredients: Prioritize services that send fresh, responsibly sourced, potentially name-brand ingredients.
- Flexibility: Life happens, especially when you’re responsible for other humans, so meal delivery services should be flexible. Look at the cancellation and pause policies.
Additionally, Kristen suggests aiming for meal choices that fill half of each family member’s plate with fruits and vegetables. She notes that while protein needs will vary among family members, a protein source should typically fill at least a quarter of their plate. The remaining quarter should be filled with a good source of complex carbohydrates, such as sweet potatoes or brown rice.
The best meal delivery services for families remove the stress of meal planning, grocery shopping and all the chopping. According to Kristen, additional benefits include alleviating the need for meal planning and reducing food waste.
In addition, Kristen recommends being mindful of the number of people the meal kit indicates it will feed. “A meal kit that feeds two people per meal is likely not sufficient to feed a family of two adults and two teenagers,” she says. As for picky eaters, she recommends involving them in the process and trying to choose meals with familiar foods.
Emotional Benefits of Meal Kits: A Family Therapist’s Perspective
Meal delivery services aren’t just about saving time in the kitchen—they can also play a meaningful role in family bonding and emotional well-being.
“Shared mealtime is incredibly important for family bonding,” says Sarah Bolor, licensed clinical social worker and owner of Say It Mental Health in Nevada. “It provides a natural opportunity for connection, communication, and emotional check-ins.” She notes that families who eat together regularly often enjoy stronger relationships, improved communication, and even better academic and mental health outcomes for children.
Meal kits help remove common barriers to family meals, like time constraints or decision fatigue, by offering pre-planned, easy-to-prepare meals. “Since the meals are preplanned and arrive on schedule, they help parents maintain a balance between work, family, and other commitments,” Bolor explains. “By eliminating the need to decide what to cook each night, meal kits simplify the process and create a more enjoyable mealtime experience.”
They’re also a great tool for involving children. “Meal kits typically provide simple, step-by-step instructions, making it easier for parents to involve their children in meal preparation,” she says. “This builds confidence, reinforces skills, and increases the chances that kids will actually enjoy the meal.”
For families with picky eaters, Bolor recommends the “love, like, learn” approach: include one food the child loves, one they like, and one they’re still learning to enjoy. “Meal kits can support this by introducing new ingredients in a structured, low-pressure way.”

Our editors tested these meal kit services multiple times over the course of two years to find the best meal delivery service for families. They’re home cooks with busy schedules and regular kitchens—just like you and the meal-prepper in your family. When cooking the recipes in their homes, they replicated the authentic experience of any consumer of these meal kit delivery services. How We Chose the Best Meal Delivery Services for Families
We chose the best meal delivery service for families by cooking two to three recipes from each. Then, we evaluated the services based on the aforementioned criteria. We noted overall value (i.e., price versus quality), family-friendliness, freshness and ease and taste of the recipes. We’ve tested over 10 meal delivery services, but only a portion of those made this list based on how suitable they are for families.
Other Services We Tested
EMIKO FRANZEN FOR TASTE OF HOME
- BistroMD: BistroMD places a significant emphasis on health and weight loss, so it’s certainly not the service for everyone, but it can accommodate just about any diet or dietary restriction.
- Cook Unity: Our Southern-Fried Chicken from Cook Unity was plenty moist, even with the extra time in the oven. However, the excessive amount of dried red pepper flakes was a little unpleasant to bite into repeatedly. Overall, it is very delicious but not the most kid-friendly.
- Factor: I was off to a bit of a rocky start with this meal service due to some ordering snafus, but the accommodating customer service rep and the quality of the meals themselves made up for it—and then some. If you’re looking for health-focused, filling meals, Factor has the “it factor.”
- Marley Spoon: While we love Marley Spoon for the adult crowd, we think it may be too involved and pricey for families.
- Purple Carrot: Purple Carrot is the perfect service for plant-based meals, but not every child is enjoying a plant-based diet.
