Our southern cabbage recipe has a ton of meaty, salty flavor. It's ready in less than 30 minutes and pairs well with comfort food staples like pork chops or fried chicken.
Ingredients
- 4 bacon strips, chopped
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 6 cups chopped cabbage
- 1/4 cup water
Directions
- Heat large skillet over medium heat. Add bacon; cook until crisp, 7-8 minutes, stirring occasionally. Use a slotted spoon to transfer bacon to a paper towel-lined plate. Reserve 2 tablespoons bacon drippings; discard remaining bacon grease.
- Add onion; cook 4-5 minutes or until soft. Stir in sugar, salt, red pepper flakes and pepper.
- Add cabbage and water; cook 8-10 minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally. Transfer to a serving dish; top with cooked bacon.
