Easy to make and a delight to eat with your favorite sauces, these crispy wonton mozzarella sticks will be on the menu at your house time and time again.

These wonton mozzarella sticks are so easy to make, it will almost feel as if you have come up with a life hack. By using premade egg roll wrappers and pieces of string cheese, forming these tasty tubes is almost like mere child’s play.

That said, frying the mozzarella sticks with wonton wrappers in hot oil is not as child-friendly of an activity. But once finished, kids and adults alike will delight in these wonton-wrapped mozzarella sticks. Serve them with a variety of sauces to make a wonderful appetizer for parties or as a snack while you watch the game.

  • String cheese: Get 12 of your favorite mozzarella string cheese sticks ready, but make sure not to peel them into strips—you want them intact.
  • Egg roll wrappers: To match those 12 pieces of string cheese, you’ll need 12 large egg roll wrappers.
  • Oil: There are various oils you can use for the deep frying, just make sure whichever you choose has a smoke point above 375°F.
  • Marinara or spaghetti sauce: Your favorite marinara or spaghetti sauce will pair beautifully with these crispy and cheesy wonton mozzarella sticks.

Step 1: Wrap the cheese sticks in the wontons

While keeping the remaining wrappers covered with a damp paper towel until they ready for use, place a piece of string cheese near the bottom corner of one egg roll wrapper. Fold the bottom corner over the cheese and roll it up halfway, then fold the sides toward the center and over the cheese. Moisten the remaining corner with water, then roll up the wonton tightly to seal it. Repeat that process with the remaining wrappers and cheese.

In a deep cast-iron or electric skillet, heat 1/2 inch of oil to 375°.

Step 3: Fry the mozzarella wonton sticks

Fry the sticks, a few at a time, until they are golden brown, 30 to 60 seconds on each side. Drain the sticks on paper towels, then serve them with marinara sauce.

  • Add chopped pepperoni: For mini wonton pizza sticks, add chopped pepperoni with the cheese in each roll. The savory flavor will be divine.

Look for egg roll wrappers in the produce section or in an ethnic food aisle. Be sure to get wrappers labeled egg roll wrappers and not spring roll wrappers. Egg roll wrappers are soft and bendable while in the package. Spring roll wrappers are usually thin, stiff and call for a dip in water to soften them.

Why are my wonton mozzarella sticks coming out limp and soggy?

For ultra crispy fried foods, the key is having the oil hot enough. If your mozzarella sticks are sogging out, kick your oil temp up a couple of notches.

Could I make these in an air fryer?

Yes you can! Set the temp to 400º (or the hottest you can if that’s above you air fryer’s maximum heat) and plan to cook them for 8 to 10 minutes.

  1. Place a piece of string cheese near the bottom corner of 1 egg roll wrapper (keep remaining wrappers covered with a damp paper towel until ready to use). Fold bottom corner over cheese. Roll up halfway; fold sides toward center over cheese. Moisten remaining corner with water; roll up tightly to seal. Repeat with remaining wrappers and cheese.
